Publication Bias Can Inflate, Exaggerate the Effectiveness of Medications
Publication bias refers to the practice of approving or disapproving studies for publication based on their results with studies showing positive results more likely to be published than those showing negative or nonsignificant outcomes. This can lead to an inflation of the effectiveness of certain drugs.
For example, a recent study found that the effectiveness of Xanax XR for panic disorder may be inflated by as much as 40%. In this case, 5 trials were conducted but only 1 showed a positive result. Of the others, 2 were published “conveying a positive outcome” and the other 2 were not published at all, making it appear as though 100% of the studies conducted were positive.
Many experts agree that publication bias is a problem in drug trials as well as scientific research as a whole. The only way to eliminate it is through a commitment to publicly share data from studies – particularly clinical trials – from the start, regardless of the outcome. In addition, the public should be aware that drugs may not be as effective as “advertised.”
“Readers should be aware that there is a strong tendency to publish only positive results, and available information often influences decision-making,” said Dr. Nathan A. Carroll. “It could skew their decision-making if clinicians don’t have the full picture.”
Light Therapy May Help Treat Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease
Light therapy may be able to improve sleep and behavioral symptoms in people with Alzheimer’s disease, a recent research analysis has found. It also helped alleviate depression, which in turn reduced the agitation of Alzheimer’s patients as well as caregiver burden.
Along with cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s usually involves symptoms like sleep disturbances, depressive behavior, agitation, and aggression. Light therapy – i.e., exposure to a controlled light source – has been explored as a potential natural treatment for these symptoms, particularly because it has shown potential for relieving depression.
The research analysis included data from 15 high-quality trials that involved a total of 598 patients. Overall, light therapy was found to significantly improve sleep efficiency for those with Alzheimer’s disease and helped reduce certain psycho-behavioral symptoms.
Although the sample sizes in current research trials are still limited, the study authors concluded that light therapy could be “a promising treatment option for some symptoms of Alzheimer's disease” with “relatively few side effects.”

Little-Known Health Risks of Microplastic Pathogens
Microplastics form when larger plastics undergo weathering and break down into smaller particles. They are already concerning as a common pollutant but may be doing even more harm than realized. In aquatic environments, microplastics act as conduits for pathogens – including those that can cause a variety of infections in humans – enhancing their survival and growth. Humans can be exposed to these harmful pathogen-laden microplastics via settings like swimming pools, showers, and recreational beaches. (More)
Physical Activity May Lower Mortality Risk in Lung Cancer Patients
Lung cancer is more deadly than many other types of cancer, but some new research has found that even small amounts of exercise could be key to prolonging life for lung cancer patients. More specifically, getting only 4.6 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily – through activities like walking – lowered mortality risk in people with inoperable lung cancer by 60% after 12 months compared to those who exercised less or not at all. An Unhealthy Gut Microbiome Could Contribute to Kidney Stones
The human microbiome is thought to be composed of trillions of microorganisms, which appear to be connected to all facets of human health. Now, a new study has revealed that changes to the gut microbiome as well as the salivary and urinary microbiomes may play a role in the formation of kidney stones. Specific microbes that might contribute have not been identified yet, but the study indicates that those with an unhealthy gut microbiome in general could be at higher risk of kidney stones. (More)
Vitamin B3 Supplement May Improve Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease
Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a naturally occurring form of vitamin B3 present in certain foods, including fruits, vegetables, and milk. It has shown promise for improving symptoms of Parkinson’s disease by increasing blood levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) when used as a high dose supplement. NAD+ is an important molecule that helps the body to produce energy and may help slow the progression of Parkinson’s, which has been shown to involve abnormal energy metabolism. (More)

Your lungs are responsible for making oxygen available to your body and for removing other gasses, like carbon dioxide. This process happens approximately 12-20 times per minute, and oxygen is transferred from inhaled air to your blood via 300-500 million tiny sacs called alveoli.
